This morning I posted a link to the last minutes of the Maho Beach cam at SXM. Starting to see some pictures of damage to the airport come up on twitter. It’s not pretty - if you live somewhere near where Irma is going to hit, heed evacuation warnings and stay safe. If your house and stuff is going to get destroyed anyways, don’t be there when it happens. You can’t possibly effect any sort of repair or damage control during a storm like this.

What the heck will they do without an airport? As is, the airport really had no business handling commercial jets. Maybe fly in to Anguilla and take a boat?
Although I imagine they aren’t in much better shape either.

I saw the first pictures and thought “that doesn’t look so bad.” Then I scrolled. Damn.

I don’t think they know at the moment. I’m sure they will throw up something temporary if they can get the runway clear and go from there.

At the moment a few Dutch navy vessels are there with supplies for 40000 people. I guess the Dutch military will help repairing and cleaning up the airport in order to be able to make sure planes with supplies are able to land as quickly as possible.

And why did the airport have

Is that the friggin Concord? I sure hope they throttled the speed way down before landing. As is, with that airport it feels as though you’re going to fall off the runway into the ocean.
